STOCKHOLM, Nov. 04, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Curt Bergfors Food Planet Prize, the world’s largest environmental award, organized by The Curt Bergfors Foundation, has announced its 2027 longlist. Out of nearly a thousand nominations, 47 initiatives from 24 countries across six continents have been selected. Together they show what collective effort can do to reduce the environmental damage caused by today’s food system. In June 2027, the winner will receive USD 1.5 million and each of the other finalists will receive USD 150,000.

Unlike many awards, the Food Planet Prize does not reward past achievements. It backs what an initiative could accomplish and how far it could scale. Reaching the next and final stage, the shortlist, also brings initiatives into the Food Planet Prize community of leading scientists, innovators, and practitioners from across the food system, opening the door to new partnerships spanning borders and sectors. “The Food Planet Prize can be more than an award. It can be a catalyst,” says Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, Co-Chair of the Food Planet Prize.

Every longlisted initiative will be presented in an article on the Food Planet Prize website. Together, the articles form a growing library of approaches across the food value chain, from farm and sea to processing, retail, and the plate. This repository is an inspiring starting point for anyone looking for new ideas being put into practice around the world.

The prize team will now examine each longlisted initiative in depth and select around five thoroughly vetted finalists with the greatest potential impact. In June 2027, the finalists will present their work in person to the international jury in Sweden, and the jury will then choose the winner.
